By: Frank Vanderlugt

In lay man’s language, veins which have enlarged and are twisted are known as Varicose Veins. Even though these can be found in different parts of the body, but they are commonly found on the leg.

Medical experts talk about something known as the Retrograde. This is when the veins in the valves in avert the blood from flowing backwards. Muscles in the leg muscles force the veins to restore the blood to the heart. The valves fail to meet properly when the veins enlarge. They fail to work properly. This is known as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). This in turn damages the valves. In the process they enlarge as the blood collects in the veins. It is said that varicose veins are found in the legs and it is due to the pressure of standing constantly.

The symptoms of Varicose Veins are, a) Having severe pain and a swollen leg, b) The ankle often swells. c) The color of the skin turns brown, d) The skin around the vein becomes dry and thin and even itchy, e) Skin darken There are several surgical and non-surgical treatments for Varicose Veins.

Surgical Treatments include open surgery. There is something known as Endovenous Laser Treatment, radiofrequency ablation which are some of the new methods of treating Varicose Veins. It is to be noted that Endovenous laser and radiofrequency ablation need good and specialized training for doctors and also require equipment which are quite costly.

Ultra sound should be used to see what the doctors are doing. The treatment in smaller branches takes much more time as compared to the initial procedure. Some practitioners also perform traditional surgery at the time of endovenous treatment.

The non-surgical treatment prescribed by doctors is to elevate the legs which will provide relief. People suffering from varicose veins much exercise regularly. There is something known as graduated compression stockings with a pressure of 30–40 mmHg, which is proved to be effective and corrects the swelling.

However, care should be taken with patients who have arterial disease. As said by doctors, there is a variation in the cost of varicose operations in some private hospitals. There are several factors which have to be taken care off. A few include, what kind of anesthetic is to be used, or what is the severity of the condition, whereabouts of the patient and which the most convenient private hospital is.

Doctors also advise that there is a variation in cost of varicose vein removal. There are some treatments which are cheap while others may be expensive. Incase there is no health insurance then a policy must be taken as there maybe some conditions which are applicable in the hospital, which require a health insurance.
